Tucked into a basement on the Falls Park side of the Edward Jones building, Vault & Vator earns its name honestly. The space still holds the original vault and elevator left by the Dr. Pepper Cola Co., which occupied the building around the turn of the last century. Finding the entrance is part of the initiation, and most first-timers walk past it at least once. Open since 2017 as downtown Greenville's first speakeasy, the bar built its name on made-to-order cocktails drawn from the Golden Age of the craft, the pre-Prohibition and Prohibition era. The menu stays small and curated on purpose, and the bartenders will happily go off it entirely: order the Dealer's Choice, give them a few words like smoky, floral, or spicy, and they build something to fit. A short food menu and a rotating shelf of books round out the room. The house rules set the tone. No cell phones, no sweats, no light beer. The lighting stays low, the music sits where you can still hold a conversation, and the whole place is built for talking over a good drink rather than for a crowd. Regulars keep coming back for the bartenders, as much for their read on what a guest actually wants as for their skill, and the low-lit, intimate room has made it a longtime pick for date nights and small celebrations.
